Specialisations

Six areas worth comparing early

Your specialisation shapes the electives you take, the projects you join and the employers who notice you. Students who explore these areas before applying write sharper statements and choose better-fitting programs.

Electric vehicles & batteries

Battery packs, thermal management, motors and power electronics for electric drivetrains.

Powertrain engineering

Engines, transmissions and hybrid systems, with a focus on efficiency and emissions.

Vehicle dynamics & safety

Suspension, steering, braking, crash structures and occupant protection.

Design & CAE

Body design, CAD modelling and simulation tools such as finite element and CFD analysis.

Manufacturing & quality

Production systems, robotics, lean methods and quality engineering on assembly lines.

Autonomous & connected systems

Sensors, embedded software, controls and driver-assistance technologies.

Inside a bachelor’s program

Core subjects you are likely to study

Most programs add workshop practice, laboratory sessions and a final-year design project, often building or modifying a real vehicle system.

Where it leads

Roles automobile engineering graduates go on to

Graduates also move into motorsport, fleet management, technical sales and road-safety work. We discuss which of these fit your interests during counselling.

Similar names, different focus

Automobile, mechanical or mechatronics?

Automobile / Automotive

Vehicle-specific from early on: engines, chassis, vehicle electronics and dynamics. Ideal if you are certain about the automotive sector.

Mechanical

Broad foundation in machines, energy and materials, with automotive electives later. Keeps options open across many industries.

Mechatronics

Blends mechanics, electronics and software. A strong route into EV control systems, robotics and autonomous vehicles.
